Haunted with Love
by Cindi Handley Goodeaux
The house on the hill sits lonely and still
Dark, faded and old
Kids are afraid of what’s lurking within
Even the boldest of bold
Passersby say there’s not one scarier
But one brave soul dares
Sweet Pearl Lee, the helpful mail carrier
Delivers daily with care
Curiosity got the best of Kate
Riding by on her bike
“Miss Pearl, who lives here?” she called from the gate
Pearl turned, her smile pearly white
“Only the nicest of nice you will meet,
Ms. Milly Thigpen
She knows and loves everyone on this street
If you are sick, a card she sends
While hospitalized my husband receives
a card once a week
Outside, this withering old house deceives
Inside, come on, take a peek!”
Sweet Pearl took Kate’s hand, led her to the door
and pressed the small bell
Pearl patiently waited, Kate paced the floor
Door opened. and there was a smell
Of cookies and cakes, cinnamon spice too
Then there was a smile
Bigger and wider than either friend knew
Clothes and hair in ancient style
“Come in, dear friends! I’m happy you’re here!”
Ms. Millie said with a hug
Kate felt so happy and warm, melting her fears
She sat down on the pink rug

Yes, if we overcome our fears, we can often find love! Lovely story. Good luck in the competition!
I’ll read this to my son. He keeps saying he’s scared of everything lately. Great story. Good luck!
This story took me by surprise. I love haunting stories and yours did not disappoint. Good luck Cindi!
Awwww, this is a sweet story. I wish you well with it.
Sweet story. You can’t always know what’s on the inside by judging the outside. Good luck with your story!
This is terrific. I love the setting and characters, so well fleshed out for just 200+ words!
